Tour Guide > > Sligo Abbey, Sligo, Ireland Also known as: Sligo Dominican Friary and The Convent of the Holy Cross What is now incorrectly known as Sligo Abbey was founded by Maurice FitzGerald in the 13th century as a Dominican Friary. The same Maurice FitzGerald was also responisble for introducing the Franciscan Order into Ireland and had earlier conquered Connaught in 1235. Its original name was The Convent of the Holy Cross. Unlike monks, friars did not seclude themselves from interaction with the people and the Friary Chapel was used for Sligo masses, albeit the Sligo townspeople stood seperatley divided by the Rood Screen. Sligo Abbey was destroyed in 1414 by fire, plundered during the Tyrone Wars in 1595. Sir Donagh O'Connor saved Sligo friary from dissolution in 1624 but it was pillaged again in 1641 during the Ulster Uprising. In the 1700s the friars moved out. It is thanks to the efforts of Lord Palmerston who restored the Abbey in the 1850s that it is so well preserved today. NOTE: There is also a more modern Sligo Dominican Friary on High Street, it is worth visiting for its aesthetic value and its beautiful organ.
